All organisations involved in the delivery of the London 2012 Games are committed to ensuring that they will not have a negative impact on the environment.
The environmental footprint and carbon emissions from the Games will be minimised by the use of low carbon and renewable energy sources. The reclamation of contaminated land in the Lower Lea Valley will result in environmental benefits. The area will become the biggest new park since Victorian times.
London 2012 has launched its Sustainability Plan which can be downloaded from this page. Within the Plan there is a section focusing on climate change and key areas for action including:
- defining and measuring the carbon footprint of the Games
- use of waterways and rail for construction freight and waste transfer
- maximising the use of public transport to reach venues during the Games
- verifiable carbon offset projects to highlight global dimension of climate change
A nature reserve for the Olympic Park has been created along the banks of the River Lea at East Marsh. |
