 Sustainability underpins the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The energy efficient design of infrastructure and buildings, use of renewable energy sources and development of environmentally friendly transport are just some of the measures that will be taken to ensure sustainability.
The Olympic Lottery Distributor shares the commitment to make the London 2012 Games the greenest games in modern times. With the help of National Lottery money, high standards in minimising waste and encouraging biodiversity can be set. A "materials" register has been set up to facilitate the re-use of material from the Olympic Park site in the design of venues, landscaping and other elements of the Park.In November 2008 the suppliers for the ODA's Timber Supply Panel were selected. (See Media Release). The Panel will ensure that only legal and sustainable timber is used during the construction of London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic venues and infrastructure. At the same time, LOCOG published an online Sustainable Sourcing Code.
Some sustainability facts:
- The Olympic Stadium will be the lightest to date containing 10,000 tonnes of steel;
- Over 90% of demolished materials are being reclaimed to be recycled or reused;
- Four complete buildings have been recycled and cladding from a 5th will be re-assembed and reused off site;
A small nature reserve is being created near the northern perimeter of the Park. The 10,000 sq m area will become the home to a variety of wildlife.
As at November 2009, the ODA had exceeded its wide ranging sustainability targets and its sustainability standards have been recognised by Industry with the presentation of the 'Legacy for Sustainability' Award at the Construction Excellence National Awards. Sustainability measures include the use of low carbon materials, recycling construction waste, incorporating rain water harvesting and bird and bat boxes into the design and build of venues.
