 The UK will commence a four year Cultural Olympiad as Beijing 2008 closes.

Individuals, organisations and artists will be encouraged to get involved in the what has been described as the "largest ever Cultural Olympiad".
The bringing together of culture and sport will be a key theme of the Cultural Olympiad which will share the values of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Legacy Trust UK is a consortium selected to establish a new charitable trust to support a diverse range of sporting and cultural events throughout the UK associated with the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games. The Legacy Trust will be supporting the UK School Games which will be held in cities throughout the UK and will give £40m of grants to community projects that will celebrate cultural and sporting excellence across the UK.
The four year Cultural Olympiad commenced on 26-28 September 2008 with an 'Open Weekend' with more than 500 events across the UK. Cultural Olympiad events include:
- Artists Taking the Lead: 12 cutting edge artists' commissions across the UK;
- Sounds: a four project approach to celebrating music as a universal language;
- Film Nation: a programme designed to get young people behind the camera and explore their world and dreams;
- World Shakespeare Festival: celebrating Shakespeare as an international property;
- World Cultural Festival: an international arts festival as a culmination of the Cultural Olympiad in 2012.
Other events include the illumination of major landmarks such as Windsor Castle in the Olympic Colours.
